About the photographer

Steven G. Smith is an editorial and commercial photographer based in Aspen, Colorado.

Smith has been a professional photographer for two and a half decades. He has spent the last eight years working as a freelance photographer for a wide variety of clients. Prior to starting his own business he had the honor to work as a staff photographer on several great publications including the Rocky Mountain News, The Commercial Appeal and The Albuquerque Tribune.

His photography is based in a desire to create and to communicate with visuals. He loves the challenges that a career in photography has brought. He had his first multimedia project published to CD over 17 years ago and continues to work in HD video and multimedia.

Smith believes strongly in giving back to the profession that has brought him so much satisfaction. When not photographing, he spends time teaching, judging photo contest, speaking engagements and mentoring aspiring photographers. He is committed to creating work that helps to improve the community in which he lives.

His photography and multimedia storytelling have been recognized by some of the worlds most prestigious contests, having received over 120 regional, national and international awards, including: The Pulitzer Prize (nominated 4 separate times, shared winner in 2003), Communication Arts, Pictures of the Year, The Best of Photojournalism, The Society of News Design, and The World Sports Foundation, etc.

His work has been published in some of the top publications and Web sites around the world. Examples including: Time magazine, U.S. News and World Report, Life magazine, Smithsonian magazine, New York Times magazine, MSNBC, GEO magazine, National Geographic, and Reader's Digest. "Over the years I have had the opportunity to work with so many interesting people. It is the people and the opportunity to create, that have made this career so rewarding.

To me, photography is not about awards or accolades, but it is about what you do with your passion to create, and the friendships you made along the way." – Steven G. Smith
